HTC Thunderbolt gets an FCC-approved teardown

We've already seen the HTC Thunderbolt hit the FCC, but it's just now getting to the good stuff now that the phone has actually been released. While it's not exactly to iFixit levels of detail, the agency has now provided us with a reasonably good teardown of the device, which lets you see just what makes this speed demon of a phone tick. Hit up the link below for a few more pictures where this one came from.

Motorola Xoom appears headed for Sprint, will sport WiMax (natch)

xoom wimax

It appears that the Motorola Xoom is heading to Sprint's network, and will sport WiMax in lieu of Verizon's LTE. (No telling if you'll have to send it back to Motorola to get it, though.) Verizon had exclusivity on the first Honeycomb tablet for quite some time, until the WiFi-only was released a couple weeks ago. Now thanks to cases appearing at Sprint stores, it looks like it will be getting some more carrier love, boasting Sprint's 4G WiMax network.

No release date yet, but you have to believe it will be soon to compete with Verizon's unit, especially when the LTE ready devices finally start rolling out. [BGR]

O'Reilly helps Japan, offers entire e-book catalog for 50% off, today only

O'reilly make some of the best computer books in the world. They also sell them as DRM-free e-books in a bunch of formats, including PDFs and Mobi for Kindle.

They usually offer one "Deal of the Day", which is a 50% discount code for a book chosen for that one day. But just for for today, they've created a discount code -- DDJPN -- that gives you a 50% discount on their entire catalog, and they give a part of the proceeds to aid Japan relief efforts.

So far they've raised over $60,000, and the day is still young. So if you've been recently hankering after some nerdy book (or three), now would be a great time to grab one.

The Veil as Gear [Blip]

France enforced a ban earlier today on full-face veils, a restriction on traditional Muslim religious garb. This is a controversial move! So let's focus briefly on the veil itself, an item that has been used primarily for religious purposes, true, but also has roots as a practical tool, a means to shield one's face from dust and sun. But culturally, societally, it's evolved into a symbol; something that can be regulated not on the base of its practicality, but its meaning. More »

It?s a Wind Up: Gorgeous Spring-Powered Toy Car Not for Kids

This gorgeous, stainless steel and bronze toy car is simply named Toy Car, which seems an appropriately stripped-down name for such a minimalist vehicle. Without a body, or even a cover over the engine, you can see exactly how the car works. It’s essentially a fancy version of the pull-back-and-go cars found in cereal boxes and [...]

Security firm RSA attacked using Excel-Flash one-two sucker punch

RSA attacked using Flash vulnerability
It has emerged that the underlying cause of RSA's SecurID gaffe was the recently-reported zero-day vulnerability found in Adobe's Flash Player.

The exploit, which used specially-crafted Flash embedding in Excel spreadsheets, was first reported on March 15 and has since been fixed. RSA was hacked sometime in the first half of March when an employee was successfully spear phished and opened an infected spreadsheet. As soon as the spreadsheet was opened, an advanced persistent threat (APT) -- a backdoor Trojan -- called Poison Ivy was installed. From there, the attackers basically had free reign of RSA's internal network, which led to the eventual dissemination of data pertaining to RSA's two-factor authenticators.

The attack is reminiscent of the APTs used in the China vs. Google attacks from last year -- and indeed, Uri Rivner, the head of new technologies at RSA is quick to point out that that other big companies are being attacked, too: "The number of enterprises hit by APTs grows by the month; and the range of APT targets includes just about every industry. Unofficial tallies number dozens of mega corporations attacked [...] These companies deploy any imaginable combination of state-of-the-art perimeter and end-point security controls, and use all imaginable combinations of security operations and security controls. Yet still the determined attackers find their way in."

What we'd like to know, though, is whether the attack on RSA was caused by Adobe's lackadaisical approach to patching Flash -- or was it the other way around? Was it the RSA attack that first brought the zero-day vulnerability to Adobe's attention?

Praising Failure: James Dyson Talks Vacuum's 5,127 Prototypes [Inventors]

Sir James Dyson, inventor of perhaps the most recognizable consumer vacuum on the market today, is completely comfortable with failure. He's good at it—failure I mean—but most great inventors are. More »

British royal family announces iOS and Android wedding app

William and KateTo celebrate the imminent marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Royal Collection will release an Android an iOS app that chronicles the last seven royal marriages, including Queen Victoria's marriage to Prince Albert in 1840.

Ironically, the app won't actually feature anything to do with William and Kate's marriage -- rather, it will focus on the "tradition, splendor and romance" that are intrinsic to British royal marriages. "[The app] will share the stories of past royal weddings and offer a wealth of historical context for the ceremony on April 29."

Unfortunately, the app, which has been lumbered with the fantastically creative name of 'Royal App,' won't be available until April 18 -- just 11 days before Kate's big day. It won't be free, either: it'll cost the rather princely sum of £1.79, or three of your Tea Party-loving dollars. The money will go to the Royal Collection, though, which is a good cause!

Sony's Move.me database used to create gesture-enabled mouse driver (video)

Unless you're into weird promotional mascots, video games, or measuring the rotation of the earth, the PlayStation Move probably hasn't caught your eye. Here's an idea: what if you could wave it about to control your PC? Earlier this week, electronics hobbyist Jacob Pennock used the Move.me C library to build a gesture-controlled mouse driver, and we've got the project's tech demo after the break. Watch as Pennock launches Facebook by drawing an "F," starts a video with a jaunty "V," and closes a few items with a quick "X" motion over the offending windows. Control motions are loaded through the creator's own gesture recognition library, called hyperglyph, which he claims can record motions with 98 percent accuracy. As Move.me is currently a closed beta, Pennock is keeping the source code under wraps, but he hopes to eventually put the driver to use controlling a gesture-based Linux media center. Pretty neat, but not quite enough to stave off our Kinect hack envy.

[Thanks, Robert]
