Angry Birds Rio coming in March

Angry Birds Rio

Angry Birds Rio, a combination of what's surely the most popular mobile game of all time with an upcoming Hollywood animated feature, is said to be hitting "app stores everywhere" in March 2011, just in time to play on your Motorola Xoom.  Based on the game trailer (you can see it after the break) it looks like our feathered friends have made their way to Brazil, and have some sort of wildlife exploiting Cockatoo to battle it out with this go 'round.  Not much to go on, other than 20th Century Fox backing the project and tie-ins with their new animated feature Rio due in April 2011.  We'll know more in six weeks or so.

In the meantime, watch the trailer and speculate like the rest of us! [@RovioMobile]

Facebook to empower its massive mobile platform with HTML5

Facebook, which now has 125 million active iPhone and Android users, will set its focus on the mobile part of its platform this year. CTO Bret Taylor, speaking at the Inside Social Apps conference, said that emphasis will be on HTML5-powered solutions, to maximize impact across all of the smartphone platforms.

Both iOS and Android have Web browsers capable of HTML5. The BlackBerry browser supports some HTML5, and Nokia/Symbian should really have an HTML5-capable browser sometime in 2011. The advantages of developing an HTML5-powered mobile site are clear: not only is there at least 125 million users just waiting to enjoy interactive HTML5 content on their phones, but it would also mean that Facebook could spend its time creating a standards-compliant and cross-platform mobile website, rather than developing individual apps for each of the smartphone platforms.

Don't forget the developers, either: imagine writing an HTML5 app or game that works across every smartphone. It would bring a whole new level of immersion to FarmVille and CityVille players -- you could play it on the train, in the bathroom, or in bed!

Is It Even Possible to Dislike Lego-ized Ghostbusters Gear? [Lego]

Staring at this Lego-ized version of a Ghostbusters ghost trap brings back memories of being six-years-old and having the toy version. It was so awesome that it made me awesome by association. I'm pretty sure that's when I peaked. More »

California Shouldn't Follow NY's Internet Tax Plan

California is facing budget problems yet again, and once again state lawmakers are hoping to shake down Internet retailers as a fast source of revenue. A bill introduced by Democratic Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner (AB 153) proposes to force out-of-state businesses to collect tax if they use an in-state company to generate leads.

GNOME 3 website now live, tries a bit too hard to be cool, looks like Unity

New, clean-and-simple HTML5 websites are obviously in this week: GNOME, one of the most popular desktop environments for Linux, has just released a new website to celebrate the features of version 3, which will be released in April.

With phrases like "SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL" and "DISTRACTION-FREE COMPUTING" plastered all over the site it's obvious that GNOME not only likes capital letters, but that it's also trying to capitalize on the recent movement towards simpler, less-shiny interfaces. GNOME 3 now has a slogan, too -- "made of easy" -- which, to be honest, feels like it's trying a bit too hard to be cool.

As to GNOME 3's actual features, there's built-in messaging (which presumably works with most IM protocols), and a new notifications system. The system settings panel has been overhauled, and the Windows key has been commandeered to provide quick access to your system: just hit the Windows key and start typing -- like Windows 7 or Vista.

Before we finish, does anyone else think that GNOME 3 looks a lot like Canonical's new Unity? There's side-by-side images of them after the break. GNOME 3's release coincides with Ubuntu 11.04, incidentally -- but, just to reiterate, while Unity will be the default desktop environment in Ubuntu, users will be free to switch to either GNOME or Unity 2D.

If you can't wait until its stable release in April, and you're feeling particularly adventurous, you can build an alpha version of GNOME 3 with JHBuild.

Start Fund: Yuri Milner, SV Angel Offer EVERY New Y Combinator Startup $150k

Everything just changed in the angel investing world. Two years ago Yuri Milner, through his investment firm DST, disrupted the traditional Silicon Valley venture capital model when he began investing in the hottest startups - companies like Facebook, Zynga and Groupon - at very high valuations and extremely easy deal terms. He looks brilliant in hindsight, with all of his U.S. investments at significantly higher valuations since he invested. Most top VC firms have begun emulating DST's deal structure. Now he's partnering (as an individual, not as part of DST) with Ron Conway's angel fund, SV Angel. And they're making a bold investment move. This evening they've just made a blanket investment offer to every Y Combinator startup in the most recent batch. They're going to invest in all of them. Every single one. And this is the biggest Y Combinator class to date - some 40 new startups.

LibreOffice 3.3, the open source office suite, now available

LibreOffice -- the Document Foundation's fork of OpenOffice -- has come a long way since the project was first announced in September 2010. Today, the Foundation has announced that its first stable release, LibreOffice 3.3, is ready to download.

Among the many changes you'll find in version 3.3 are the arrival of new import filters and improvements to existing ones -- key features when you're trying to persuade users to migrate from competing suites like Microsoft Office, Works, or WordPerfect. Calc (the LibreOffice spreadsheet app) now boasts better Excel interoperability, SVG images can be opened and modified in Draw, and they can also be imported into Writer.

The Suite's PowerPoint alternative -- Presenter -- now ships with a presentation mode plug-in which makes controlling slideshows from your laptop a breeze. Testers will enjoy the addition of Experimental Mode, which you can toggle if you'd like to play with new features before they've officially been added to LibreOffice. It's a bit like the about:flags page in Google Chrome. LibreOffice 3.3 also sports a long list of interface and usability tweaks -- check out this page at the official site for a complete rundown.
