Freaky Cows is an aquatic-themed bovine Time Waster

freakycows
As you may know, cows do not float. They tend to be heavier than water, so they sink. Not being a creature of the sea, when a cow drowns, it ceases to live. So if you like cows and encounter a bunch of cows that are on the verge of drowning, you might be moved to save them --and that's pretty much the premise of Freaky Cows.

You get a queue of objects and when you click the screen, the next object appears. The first thing on every level is some sort of a floating platform - it may be a long plank, or a bunch of logs loosely bunched together (these can float apart, as you can see in the screenshot).

Once the first floating object is in the water, the next click usually drops a cow on it, and it happily floats. Of course, saving just one cow isn't enough. Cows are social creatures, so you have to save the whole herd. When you drop the next cow on the floating plank, it changes the balance and causes the plank to sink deeper into the water. If you're not careful, the whole plank might tip over -- and there go the cows! You may receive extra planks later on, which you can use to bolster up your platform.

There are bulls, too, and a bull weighs four times as much as a cow -- so you need to be extra-careful with them. Happily, though, you don't have to save every cow. I mean, every cow is precious, but you can usually get away with saving only nine out of twelve or so and still pass the level.

Freaky Cows is highly recommended, and I greatly enjoyed the frantic mooing in the soundtrack.

Does Technology Live Forever? Submit Your Dead Tech

Technology becomes obsolete, but nothing goes away. That’s what WIRED magazine’s founding editor Kevin Kelly argues in his new book What Technology Wants. He claims that inventions never go extinct once created, and he hasn’t found a single gadget that has completely vanished off the face of the Earth. “I say there is no species of technology [...]

Skype 5 for Mac intentionally blocks Flash and other programs from using your webcam

It seems that Skype 5 for Mac, by design, blocks any other application from using your webcam while it's installed. A commenter on the bug report suggests that it also affects Windows machines, but we were unable to replicate the bug with Windows 7.

The crazy thing is that you have to uninstall Skype 5 before using your webcam with other programs, including Flash applets on websites. It almost makes sense that Skype would reserve your webcam when it's running -- but even when it isn't? As the commenters on Hacker News note, the Skype for Mac support forum isn't the happiest place on the interwebs at the moment.

To top things off, Skype has known about the issue since the Skype 5 for Mac beta in November. Skype developer Beom Soo Park even admits that it's a feature, not a bug. There's no explanation for the very, very odd functionality, and no ETA for a fix.

[Just as this post published, the Skype bug tracker has gone offline. Hopefully it's just temporary.]

Motorola's Atrix 4G HD Multimedia Dock spotted online next to a $60 price tag

We can't say we make a habit of checking out Fommy.com or Mobile City Online's digital shelves when searching for our mobile gear, but these obscure retailers look to be the first to come out with pricing for the Atrix 4G's HD Multimedia Dock. Fommy lists it as a straight up $59.95 charge, whereas its direct competitor is already discounting the cradle down to $49.99. Both are offering pre-orders only at this point, with no known dates of arrival, but at least we've got a ballpark figure to play with.

Review: Dell Streak 7

Here we go again: another impressive 7-inch Android tablet with a Gorilla Glass screen, 4G networking, and a suave interface. But is this thing more of the same or something new. The tried-and-true 7-inch tablet is, by now, old hat. In fact, little about the Dell Streak 7 is new except the clear emphasis on media playback and T-Mobile's 4G wireless. On the aggregate, I'd say that this is a strong showing for Dell but does just enough to stand out from the current tablet crowd.

APX Alarm becomes Vivint as it expands into Z-Wave home automation

Heard of APX Alarm Security Solution? Probably not. But that's ok, it's par for the course when discussing home automation, a market segment mostly ignored by the big boys of consumer electronics. Today APX is making a grand entrance into home automation thanks to a $443 million investment by Goldman Sachs. The company's new lineup of Z-Wave-based automatic door locks, video surveillance and lighting and small appliance controls will be sold under the new Vivint identity. Better yet, the new Z-Wave modules are designed to work with the APX Go!control alarm panels already purchased by some 170,000 customers. Look for products to be generally available on March 1st.

Samsung adds Lovefilm streaming to UK Blu-ray players

Lovefilm, the closest thing Europe has to an answer to Netflix, was recently swallowed whole by the Amazon juggernaut, but that doesn't seem to have stunted its progress toward ubiquitous availability. Samsung has just announced its intent to include Lovefilm movie streaming as an app on all of its Blu-ray players in the UK, enhancing both the subscription service's profile and its own claim to providing the user with multifunctional, "smart" technology. It's disappointing not to see this rollout effective across all of Lovefilm's European markets, but we guess small steps are better than no steps.

CorelDRAW tutorial: Trace, vectorize and modify a simple logo (video)

coreldrawtutorial
This is the second CorelDRAW tutorial in a series of four. Last week we looked at how to make a Polaroid-like image, and this week I'd like to show you how to vectorize a simple logo. I use the Android logo in the video, but you can do this with pretty much any logo other simple graphic.

There are many reasons why you might like to vectorize an existing logo. Perhaps you need to modify it, integrate it into a larger design, or generate a high-res printout. As you can see in the video, there's not much you can do with the low-res Android logo Google gives you. If your bitmap logo is large enough, you might be able to use CorelDRAW's auto-trace capabilities and simply generate a good vector outline of it. However, since the bitmap I selected was so small (and simple), I opted to use a completely manual tracing method - I just recreated the Android logo using a few simple shapes.

Rather than wax poetic about what the video contains, if you're curious to see the Android logo dissected and recreated in full vector glory, just watch the video after the jump.
