PlayOn brings Hulu, Netflix viewing to Android beta testers

Whlie Hulu and Netflix still don't have first-party apps in the Android Market, PlayOn users will soon be able to tap into the popular video services on their Android smartphones. Once again, it's PlayOn which has a solution. PlayOn released an iOS version back in August 2010 and is now passing out invites to its customers (like this one sent to us by Chris H.) to join an expanded Android beta test. There are a couple of prerequisites involved, of course. You need a a licensed copy of PlayOn and a device running Android 2.2 Froyo or better, and PlayOn also only works over Wi-Fi -- at least for now.

The invite also offers encouragement for those who don't make the beta cut: PlayOn for Android is "very close" to being released into the wild.

One-Click Subscriptions Come To the iPad

Apple exec Eddie Cue announced today at The Daily launch, as expected, that Apple will be enabling subscription pricing for news apps. There will be one-click subscription billing either weekly (99 cents) or yearly ($39.99). Apple is starting with The Daily, but Cue says "you will hear an announcement very soon for other publications." Cue also notes that consumers have downloaded over 200 million news apps so far,and that was without subscription billing and generally poor experiences. The subscription billing solves a business model problem for media companies, but now they have to create compelling products that people will not only want to pay for but keep paying for over time.

Avast 6 beta buffs up free antivirus with better sandboxing, new Web protection

It may have taken a long time for Avast to move from version 4 to 5, but that's not going to be the case with Avast 6. A beta version has been made available for download, and there are plenty of new features that will make Avast 6 a worthy antivirus program for Windows.

Two technologies which were introduced in paid editions of Avast 5 -- the Web Script Shield and site blocking -- have been made added to the free version of Avast 6. A new Web reputation plug-in has been added which adds Web of Trust-like functionality to both Firefox and Internet Explorer (including IE9). Paid version also include a new virtualized "SafeZone" designed to better secure sensitive data transmitted to the Web -- such as details provided during online banking sessions or checkout.

Avast 6 also improves its sandboxing abilities with a new feature that automatically isolates suspicious applications as soon as they are executed. The sandbox itself has been improved, though no specifics were given in the release post.

AT&T?s Last-Minute iPhone Blitz: ?Feel free to make a call while reading this email.?

Well, you have to give AT&T some credit. They are trying really hard to make sure they don't succumb to a massive hemorrhage of users when the Verizon iPhone hits in a couple of days. Today, they've been sending out emails to current customers with the following subject line: Feel free to make a call while reading this email. Very clever. This, of course, plays up the fact that while the AT&T iPhone can support both data and voice at the same time, the Verizon iPhone can't (due to current CDMA limitations).

Apple: Nothing Has Changed. Except For This One Thing.

Last night the New York Times published a report stating that Sony's E-Reader application had been rejected from Apple's App Store, because it used a transaction system other than Apple's In-App Payments. What's worse, Apple was apparently blocking applications from downloading content that had been purchased outside the application ? which could spell bad news for Amazon's Kindle platform. Now an Apple spokesperson has given us this statement:
"We have not changed our developer terms or guidelines. We are now requiring that if an app offers customers the ability to purchase books outside of the app, that the same option is also available to customers from within the app with in-app purchase."
Huh? At first glance it looks like the NYT article was simply mistaken ? Apple is saying that its terms and guidelines are the same. Except now it's apparently choosing a different way to actually enforce those terms.
