Nielsen: Apple iAds More Effective Than TV Ads

According to the soup company Campbell's, Apple iAds are twice as memorable as TV ads to the general public. The iAd probably cost Campbell's about $1 million whereas a similar TV campaign could cost a bit more than $25 million. The Campbell's campaign included a charming iPhone app as well, which could have improved the memorability of the ad. They were trying to get people to buy reduced-sodium soup, which is nice for them.

How to change Android keyboards or input methods

android
This week's tips series is all about Android, highlighting some the operating system's built-in utilities, and better ways of getting stuff done. For other technology tips, check our Tips index.

When I first started using my Android devices, one of the most frustrating things I had to figure out was how to switch keyboards, or input methods. I don't just mean input languages, but switch to a completely different keyboard, such as Swype.

Well, it turns out it's a two-step process:

1) First you have to enable the keyboard (or "input method"). You do this by going to Settings > Language & keyboard and checking the box next to the keyboard's name. Android will make sure you know what you're doing, and once you confirm, it will enable the keyboard.

2) Next, go to any text field (for instance, start composing a new text message or email) and long-press the text-field. You will get a pop-up with all sorts of actions, one of which would say Input method. Press that, and you'll get the long list you can see in the screenshot. From here it's just a matter of tapping the name of the keyboard you want, and then merrily typing along.

Precorder: A Simple System for Catching Acts of Semi-Spontaneity

Now that all our pockets contain phones and all those phones contain cameras, a societal panopticon has been formed, and nothing we do in public is safe from the never-blinking eye of YouTube and the like. If that sounds a little shrill, keep in mind it's not all bad, as long as you don't take yourself too seriously and aren't in the habit of committing felonies in full view of other people.

Sony's Kaz Hirai discusses NGP strategy, longevity, expectations (video)

Why was the NGP announced so far ahead of its launch? How long does Sony expect the NGP to reign before a refresh is needed? What impact will the NGP have on Nintendo's supremacy in mobile gaming? Each of those questions has been handled by Sony Computer Entertainment's chief Kaz Hirai in a video interview you can now eyeball after the break. In case you want the textual version of his responses, Kaz says the PSP successor was unveiled early in order to allow Sony to get as many third-party developers on board as possible (which is a lot easier when you don't have to worry about them leaking your hardware to Engadget), the new mobile console's lifetime should be no less than what we've come to expect from Sony's home consoles (so at least four or five years), and Sony's weapons for attacking Nintendo's dominance will be the litany of integrated sensors and connectivity options at the NGP's disposal. Kaz is careful to note that Sony is only aiming to improve on the PSP's current install base, but we suspect Sony's unofficial ambitions are far higher than that.

Enchanted Keyfinder quickly discover or change your Windows and Office product keys

We've all been there: you need to reinstall Windows or Office, but you can't find the blasted product key! Perhaps you've mislaid the disc's paper wallet, or more commonly the sticker on the bottom of your laptop has been rubbed off. The only solution, other than grabbing a pirate version, is to use a tool like Enchanted Keyfinder.

Enchanted Keyfinder, which is free, open-source, and only 400KB big, does just two things: it shows you the product keys for your Windows (95, 98, ME, NT, 2K, XP, Vista and 7) and Office (2007 and 2010) installations -- and in the case of Windows XP, it also lets you change your product key. If you have a broken Windows installation, you can also use Enchanted Keyfinder with a Linux live CD; neat. There's also the option to export your product keys to a flat text file, which is probably a good idea!

In the next version, the developer wants to add remote registry access, which could be a handy tool for a system administrator. He also wants to add serial key snooping for other programs. Incidentally, if you're looking for a tool that can extract product keys from programs like Photoshop and Dreamweaver, Softkey Revealer is still going strong!

iPhone 4 to get AT&T mobile hotspot capabilities on February 13th?

So you might have noticed a few reviews of Verizon's iPhone 4 crop up last night, nothing unusual about that, but a couple of its reviewers have had something to say about AT&T's version of the phone as well. Walt Mossberg and David Pogue (who has since stricken the date from his review) both pinpoint February 13th as the date when they expect AT&T to turn on the Personal Hotspot capability that Verizon's iPhone will have from launch. That's expected to happen with an update to iOS 4.3, which recently went out to developers in its third beta iteration, suggesting the software's nearly mature enough for public consumption and seemingly fitting right into this timeline. Mind you, this is still not concrete information, as Mossberg could conceivably have been talking of AT&T's Mobile Hotspot app which is launching on the same day on devices like the Inspire 4G, and Pogue could have deleted the date for similar reasons, but we're somehow disinclined to believe that two gentlemen in a position to have insider(ish) intel would both make such a mistake at the same time.
