Robot Cops Aren't Supposed to Drop Grenades and Run Over Them [Video]

I thought bomb squads used robots to extract explosives in a safe manner. When said robot drops potentially-live grenades AND THEN RUNS OVER THEM with its treads, I don't think the robot is doing a very good job. More »

Access files on your Android via Wi-Fi with Samba Filesharing

Want a nice, simple way to access files on your Android smartphone over a wireless network? Check out Samba Filesharing, an easy-to-configure app which lets you browse your SD card contents in your favorite desktop file manager.

After you install the app, launch it and create a password -- the default username is SDCARD, though you can change that if you wish. Once your changes have been made, tap your Back button to return to the main screen and then tap Menu to bring up the four action buttons. Disable and re-enable SMB services, and you'll receive a notification with the path to your device -- such as \\192.168.0.100 and \\ANDROID.

You can also configure the NetBIOS name (the ANDROID bit) if you want to use something a bit more personal. The app also features a 'wakelock' which keeps your Droid from dozing when you're trying to access files.

Root access is required, and you'll also need Superuser or Superuser Permissions installed (find one with a quick Market search).

Google Apps Marketplace adds Education section to entice schools

With Microsoft busily pitching Live@Edu to learning institutions, Google continues to do what it can to make Google Apps an attractive alternative. Yesterday, the company announced the addition of a new Education category to the Google Apps Marketplace, which is designed to "make it easier for schools to have more web apps at their fingertips." Right now, the category includes around two dozen apps, ranging from the Haiku learning management system to BrainPOP's educational movies.

Julia Stiglitz of the Google Apps for Education Team states that this is just the beginning. Google has also announced a pair of webinars to introduce schools to Apps for Education -- to register, head on over to the official announcement.

Groupon?s ?Rejected? Super Bowl Ad Is A (Subtle) Jab At LivingSocial

The battle of the social media Super Bowl ads continues, with daily deals Groupon just posting on its own blog about how it rejected an ad where someone goes through a "deal a day" addiction, a concept conspicuously similar to what people are reporting competitor LivingSocial has up its sleeve for its 30 second ad before this Sunday's Steelers vs. Packer's game. Internet Retailer describes LivingSocial's ad, "The pre-game spot tells the story of how one man's life changes as a result of his ?deal addiction? with LivingSocial. The campaign was created by Martin Agency."The details of what Groupon has up its sleeve for Sunday are still unknown.

Verizon breaks first day sales record with iPhone 4 pre-orders -- in only two hours

It took Verizon only two hours of having the iPhone 4 available for pre-order to break its all-time record for first day sales of a single device. That's in spite of the fact it only opened up pre-orders to its own subscribers and did so in the dead of night. To be clear, between 3AM and 5AM yesterday morning, more people ordered up the iPhone 4 than Verizon has been able to get through its doors on any full product launch day. Predictably, the carrier hasn't bothered to include the actual number of devices ordered up, but judging from the server issues it was having immediately after making the handset available and the subsequent shutdown of advance pre-orders, we'll go ahead and guess it was "a lot."
