Ricoh CX5 reviewed: only marginally better than the CX4

Well, isn't this just cute? If you'll recall, Ricoh's CX4 was found to only be "slightly superior" the CX3 that came before it (and the same with the CX2 / CX3 before that). Fast forward a few months, and it's the same song and dance all over again... but with different model numbers, of course. The fine folks over at Photography Blog recently put the similarly styled CX5 through its paces, and autofocus aside, it's essentially the same camera as the CX4. The lone standout feature on the new guy is the Hybrid AF feature, which most certainly improves autofocus times, but critics were quick to point out that the focus time on the CX4 was never really an issue to begin with. In fact, the following line just about sums it up: "The CX5 is virtually indistinguishable from the slightly older CX4 in terms of its design, image quality and feature set, with only the faster AF system to get truly excited about." Furthermore, the rest of the point-and-shoot world has evolved quite a bit during all of this time, making the CX5 an even less compelling option than the CX4 was during its own launch window. Feel free to hit the source link for the whole shebang, but don't expect to leave feeling any warmer about that impulse buy you just made.

Paranormal Shark Activity is a hopping Time Waster

paranormalsharkactivity
The shark is a majestic creature; it's also pretty dangerous. When Paranormal Shark Activity starts off, you're just a dude hanging out on the pier. You quickly discover there's no way to go left (back to the city or the port, presumably) - there's only one choice, which is to keep going right, into the water.

Once you go into the water, the actual game starts. A huge (and I do mean huge) shark appears on the left side of the frame, and you have to keep jumping between crates and platforms floating on the water to try and keep ahead of the shark.

When you fall into the water between crates, you don't drown - you just float there, idling about as shark bait. Hitting SPACE makes you jump for the next platform.

Once you've gone for a short while, you will start picking up the occasional bomb along the way. Hitting UP will launch a bomb at the shark, which will then disappear for a few seconds.

When the shark reappears, it may do so from any side of the screen - so don't get to close too the right side!

Android launcher showdown: LauncherPro, ADW, Zeam, GO Launcher and QuickDesk

Android's greatest, platform-defining feature is customizability. The entire operating system is open-sourced, APIs are laid bare, and almost every user-facing part of the OS can be modified by apps.

There's no surprise, then, that replacement apps exist for almost every part of Android's stock functionality. In turn, to complete the circle of life, new versions of Android incorporate the functionality of replacement apps. It's the ecosystem of replacement apps, in fact, that helps drive Android's disgustingly fast iteration.

Today we're going to look at by far the most popular type of feature-replacement apps: launchers. With strong, age-old offerings from LauncherPro and ADW, and fresh upstarts Zeam, GO Launcher and QuickDesk, the field couldn't be stronger. Competition is driving developers to cram new features in on a weekly basis. The end result, of course, is that you and I get to reap the rewards.

But which launcher replacement is the best? There's only one way to find out.

ASUS chairman Jonney Shih promises 'secret weapon' to rival iPad 2, disses 3DTVs

Jonney Shih has never been one to back down from his stance on anything, and in a recent sit-down with IDG News Service, the ASUS chairman delivered quite a few nuggets worth poring over. For starters, he played up (and subsequently downplayed) a "secret weapon" that would likely rival the iPad 2, but wouldn't go so far as to confirm that said weapon would actually be a slate. His response to prying? "I think it's best not to say now. You will have to wait until the launch." He also noted that personal cloud computing was poised to boom, and didn't leave much hope for the likes of webOS and QNX -- he claims that there is only room for three OS camps to win, and those three slots are already occupied with Windows, Android and iOS. Finally, he took the opportunity to fling water on the 3DTV buzz, noting that he "doesn't think that will prevail." He did leave open the possibility for glasses-free options in handhelds to succeed, but beyond that, it's safe to say he's not much of a 3D advocate. Hit the source link for the full skinny, but don't go digging for any extra details on his iPad 2 killer -- something tells us you'll be sorely disappointed.

How would you change Logitech's Revue with Google TV?

Remember Google TV? It's still kickin', but El Goog still has quite a few content distribution quibbles to solve before it can be taken seriously -- at least in our estimation. Logitech was one of the first outfits to buy into Google's scheme to take over the television, with the Revue first out of the gate to provide Google TV access to existing sets. We had our fair share of gripes with the box, and while it definitely enabled quite the unusual videocall in a prior episode of The Engadget Show, we were never convinced said fun was worth the price. Enough about us, though -- how's your Revue treating you? Has it revolutionized the way you consume television content? Anything you'd change about it? Tweak the user interface? Broaden compatibility? Change up the keyboard? Let us know in comments below -- something tells us Google's still listening up for input.

Ze Frank?s Star.me Is Like Being In Kindergarten All Over Again

Every once in awhile you come across people who are entirely original, and Ze Frank is one of those people. While many people as eccentric as Frank end up with a not so amazing lot in life, Frank, who originally studied Neuroscience at Brown, most recently received $500K from Andreesen Horowitz, Betaworks, Lerer Ventures, Founder Collective, Gary Vaynerchuk and Ron Conway to focus on creating novel social games. Now the world gets to see the fruits of his labor.

IE8 biggest grower in January, while Chrome hits 10% and iOS devices reach 2%

It's the beginning of a new month, and as always, Net Applications has published its findings from the last 30 days. They're slightly more exciting than usual, too: Chrome gained 0.72% to arrive at 10.7%, while Internet Explorer 8 gained a massive 1.15% to sit pretty at 34.17%. The IE9 beta now accounts for 0.5% usage share worldwide. Firefox lost a small amount of ground and Opera gained a tiny bit.

More interestingly, iOS accounted for 2% of all browsing on the Web in January 2011. The percentage was as high as 10% in Singapore, and 5% in Australia and the U.K. -- the U.S. was above average at 3.4%. Android, despite apparently awesome sales, only accounted for 0.49% of Web browsing -- and as to why its share is so low, we can only really guess. It could be for economic reasons -- Android phones are cheaper, and data packages are expensive -- or perhaps Android phones are being sold in regions without 3G connectivity.

Greenpois0n untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 comes to Windows

It's been a painful two days, hasn't it? If you're a Windows user looking for an untethered jailbreak for your iDevice, the answer is most certainly "yes." The Chronic Dev Team has just let loose the greenpois0n untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1, but unlike the build released 48 hours ago, this one's meant for Wintel boxes. The team's site seems to be down at the moment (shocker!), but there's a download mirror linked below if you just can't wait to get going. As always, we'd caution you to back up your iPad, iPod touch or iPhone before doing the deed, and since it's the first of its kind (for this version of iOS, anyway), we'd be ready to see a few bugs along the way. Minor details, we know.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

NFL teams may replace playbooks with iPads

A few NFL teams, including the Dallas Cowboys, might soon be joining the 21st century by adopting of iPads to replace their paper playbooks and game-day printouts. This could help keep some teams from using over 5,000 pieces of paper per game! Not only would this help save some trees but think of the possibilities [...]
