Xeno Defense is a fantastic tower defense Time Waster

xenodefense
117,944 - that's my final score in Xeno Defense. I think this is the first Time Waster I found addictive enough to actually play all the way to the end. It is a casual game - you don't have to finish it to enjoy it. But it was easy enough, and definitely addictive enough, for me to just finish. It took me about half an hour, I think.

There's a story line, but it's not very important. The gist of it is that you're a scientist stranded in an outpost, and there's an alien invasion. Your encampment is all the way to the right side of the screen, with swarms of aliens coming in from the left and trying to invade. Your job is to shoot them and defend your turf.

As the game evolves, you gain experience points. At the end of each level you go to the store and choose what you want to spend your points on: new buildings, new weapons, upgrade existing weapons, or invest in repairing your base.

The final goal is to build a weapon that's advanced enough to use against the alien mothership. This is done by building enough research buildings - but you must balance the buildings you buy with your weapons upgrades, because each swarm of aliens is stronger than the last.

I finished the game with two days to spare; what was your score?

Firefox Friday: Firefox 5, HTML5 games, WebM DRM, and beta updates

Like a fiery phoenix rising from the ashes, Firefox Friday is back!

Mozilla has been incredibly silent since November, with the only real news being the adoption of two adorable red pandas (firefoxes) at Knoxville Zoo, Tennessee. The entire engineering team has been in crunch mode, churning through as many bugs as possible to get Firefox 4 into shape for late-February or early-March release, and thus, except for beta releases, not a whole lot has happened. Beta 11, incidentally, should be here in the next few days and beta 12 will be a week after that. Then, ladies and gentlemen, a week after that, we may have a release candidate on our hands.

Things have been a little more exciting at Mozilla Labs, however. It continues to churn out excellent (restartless!) add-ons like Home Dash and Instant Preview that will no doubt end up as built-in features of Firefox 5.

Yes, Firefox 5.

uTorrent 3 alpha goes 64-bit

If you've been waiting for a native 64-bit version of uTorrent, your wait is over! The team has released its first alpha version for testing, and it's ready to download and install on your Windows x64 system. Just head on over to the uTorrent 3.0 alpha 64-bit forum post for the link.

So what does the 64-bit version get you? Not a lot, as far as your torrent experience is concerned. Support for a larger disk cache is about it, along with the fact that Windows won't have to do any x86 emulation to run uTorrent. Commenters have reported occasional crashing, but this is an alpha release we're talking about -- so that's to be expected.

Amazon Adds Real Page Numbers to Kindle

Amazon must have heard the martini-fueled whining of Wired.com New York Bureau Chief John C Abell, for it is finally adding real page numbers to Kindle Books through a firmware update (v3.1). One big complaint about e-readers is that their page numbers don’t correspond to the page numbers in a printed book. This makes it tricky [...]

Verizon iPhone?s Chipset Hints at Unified Network Support

Hardware geeks have carefully dissected the Verizon iPhone to dig up its secrets. Repair company iFixit pried open the iPhone and found that it uses the same Qualcomm chipset as the Droid Pro “World Phone.” That means this chipset is capable of supporting both GSM and CDMA, which means Apple might unify Verizon and AT&T iPhones [...]
