Intivation intros Umeox Apollo smartphone: $100, solar-powered, Android 2.2 (hands-on)

Rugged? Check. Built-in flashlight? Nod. Solar panel on the rear? Yep. Android 2.2? For sure. All of the essentials (and then a few extras) have been tossed onto the Umeox Apollo smartphone, shown off for the first time today at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. It's hardly a high-end device -- in fact, at just $100 off-contract, it's bound to be one of the less-capable Froyo handsets on the market. But considering that this is positioned to put Android into the hands of those who aren't exactly champing at the bit to spend a month's wages on a phone, we'd say it's a huge step in the right direction. When asking about specifications, we were told to expect a MediaTek processor, microSD card slot, rear-facing camera and a SIM card slot. The unit on display was a non-working mockup, with an on-site representative noting that shipments should begin to Europe, Latin America and India this May (with other nations to follow). The device felt satisfactorily solid, but unfortunately, no technical details were available regarding the solar panel on the rear.

In related news, the company was also showcasing a couple of other innovations: a new solar cell microchip and its first solar cell. Prior to this week, Intivation only sold the microprocessors, forcing partners to go and find their own panel supplier. Now, it's entering another business with the Sunboost3 all-in-one solar module, and if it's hopes and dreams come true, you'll start seeing these on a slew of upcoming handsets. Hit the PDFs below for more of the nitty-gritty, and peek the Apollo mockup in the gallery below.

SmartQ announces Ten, an Android tablet packing IPS display with piezoelectric touchscreen

OK, before y'all haters state the obvious in the comments below, there's actually something noteworthy about this familiar-looking Chinese slate. What we have here is the SmartQ Ten (or T10, as referenced above), a forthcoming Froyo tablet that'll feature a juicy Cortex-A9 chip plus a Mali 400 GPU, as well as 512MB RAM and a 9.7-inch 1024 x 768 IPS display. This wouldn't be the first Android device to get the IPS goodness, though, as its predecessor R10 -- launched with Android 2.1 and a 720MHz processor back in December -- also has the same LCD panel within a seemingly identical form factor. In fact, we stumbled upon an R10 earlier today, and the prettiness of the screen did surprise us.

But what really sells the Ten is its piezoelectric touchscreen, which supports multitouch input even with non-conductive objects like the old school styli. This means said tablet can achieve light transmittance similar to its capacitive touchscreen counterparts but using cheaper parts, as well as having point-input precision similar to those with resistive touchscreens but with better screen clarity. Alas, no date or price has been announced for the Ten just yet, nor do we know if it'll get Honeycomb in the future, but price it right and it might still get some love.

Sony Ericsson touts Xperia Play multiplayer gaming, promises 50 titles at launch

A gaming phone's not very special without some games to back it up, and Sony Ericsson has thankfully filled in at least a few new details about that part of the equation at its MWC press conference today. That includes a hint of some mobile hotspot-based multiplayer gaming, and a promise of "over 50 titles" that will be available at launch, including Guitar Hero, Assassin's Creed, Dead Space and Reckless Racing. Unfortunately, it's not clear how many of those will actually be exclusive to the Xperia Play as opposed to Android phones in general, although it seems that Dungeon Defenders Wave 2 will be one non-PlayStation exclusive to the platform (along with some extra levels for Reckless Racing). Stay tuned for more details as we get them.

Update: Head on past the break for a video that gives a glimpse of a few more games.

Read The Daily iPad-exclusive digital newspaper online for free

Depending which posts you read about The Daily -- News Corp's new iPad-exclusive digital "newspaper" -- it's either the most amazing thing to happen to print media in a long time, or just another ho-hum e-publication. Either way, there's good content to read -- and you can now do that for free, whether you own an iPad or not.

Waxy.org's Andy Baio built The Daily Indexed, a Tumblr blog that pulls links from the current Daily headlines and cover, and then lays it all out for anyone to enjoy. You won't get a fancy visual experience, of course -- just a straightforward dump of titles, snippets, and bit.ly links to the posts at thedaily.com.

Last blocks of IPv4 addresses allocated, exhaustion now imminent

This is just a quick note to say that, in a ceremonial event in Miami, the last five blocks of IPv4 addresses have now been handed out by IANA, a part of ICANN. Each of the five regional registries -- North America, South America, Europe, Africa and Asia -- now have only a few million IP addresses to allocate.

IP address exhaustion will hit Asia first. With 24 million IP addresses used by APNIC in January 2011, and only around 50 million addresses left in its pool, exhaustion is expected to occur in the next few months. Europe will be next, probably towards the end of 2011, and North America will follow sometime in 2012.

Are you prepared for the IPocalypse?!
