Forget 90/10 Split, Key To Google One Pass Is That Customer Information Is Shared With Publishers

In perhaps the most coincidental bit of timing ever, Google has today announced their content subscription and management service for publishers: One Pass. Okay, let's be honest, it's not coincidental. Google announced it today because just yesterday, Apple announced their own subscription service within the App Store. And their offering is highly controversial, to say the least. Google, it appears, is once again taking the anti-Apple approach. In their blog post on the matter, the company makes it very clear that they mean for One Pass to be very publisher-friendly. But is it too publisher-friendly?

Google Image Search now lets you filter vector-only results

google
Google Image Search just got a bit fancier: You can now filter search results to only include SVG files.

SVG files, which stand for Scalable Vector Graphics, are files you can easily edit and change without loss of definition. If you've been following our Corel tutorials, they might have given you some ideas about the power of vector graphics.

Being able to use Google to find such files gives designers a great head-start: Need to use a cat in your artwork? Just find a vector one which looks about right, and modify it for your needs! Anything can be edited - the cat's pose, its proportion, colors, etc.

Searching for these files is very simple: Just tack filetype:svg on to the end of your search, like cat filetype:svg, or go to the sidebar and click Images > SVG files.

Being able to find SVGs so easily also poses a bit of a copyright issue however. Anyone posting SVG files publicly should certainly put in a bit more of an effort to make their terms of use very clear, and anyone using them should heed those terms. Play nice folks!

Slash Boom is a fun, easy physics time waster

slashboom
Slash Boom is one of the easier time-wasters I've played recently, but I still enjoyed it. The rules are very simple: Your goal is to blow most of the structure off the screen. At each level, you get two "slashes" and one "boom". The "slashes" are click-and-drag motions you make across the structure, which cut it. Once you've placed two strategic cuts, it's time for the "boom": simply click anywhere on the screen to strategically detonate a bomb.

You can either click on the structure itself or next to it; if you placed your "slashes" strategically enough and picked a good spot for the bomb, a significant chunk of the structure will fly off the screen.

You will probably fly through the first few levels, but then the shapes become a bit more complex, and the game gets harder. I like it that they made the game harder by making more "difficult" shapes, rather than just making them larger (and thus more difficult to explode off the screen).

Bottom line: It's a quick, fun brain-teaser.

Imperfect Balance is a classic physics time waster

imperfectbalance
Imperfect Balance is a very simple game: You have a bunch of blocks on a "stage" in the middle of the screen, and your goal is to make them all fall off.

You do this by using other blocks: There are several blocks you can use on each level; you pick a block and rotate it using A and D (or W and S for finer angles). Once you have it at the angle you want, simply click to drop it. It's not an easy game, despite being simple. You need to drop the right block at the right angle and at the right location -- sometimes that's trivial, but it can be quite daunting too.

The soundtrack is somewhat on the eerie side, but it's not too irritating. All in all, there are certainly worse ways to kill a few minutes.

Debian 6 Squeeze, the universal operating system, finally released

After exactly two years of development and with over 10,000 new packages, version 6 of the wunderkind jack of all trades, Debian, has been released. This release, along with support for i386, amd64, powerpc, sparc, mips, mipsel, ia64, s390 and armel architectures, also features a technical preview of Debian ported to the FreeBSD kernel, dubbed Debian GNU/kFreeBSD.

Along with the usual slew of updated software packages (no GNOME 3 though!), Debian 6 also reaffirms its role as the One OS to Run Them All with the addition of some 10,000 new packages, bringing the total number of software packages in Debian up to more than 29,000. If you want some idea of just how broad Debian's coverage is, check out the new Debian Pure Blends.

Bearded purists will be interested to hear that the Debian 6 kernel is, for the first time, completely free. The problematic non-free firmware files have been moved into a non-free area of the Debian archive, and will have to be explicitly included if you want to use them.

Finally, alongside GNOME, Debian 6 ships with KDE Plasma Desktop, Xfce and LXDE desktop environments. There's also a KDE Plasma Netbook shell that makes Debian a lot more usable on small form-factor devices.

The best way to download Debian 6 is with BitTorrent, but there are HTTP and FTP sources too. If you're enjoying a particularly slow Sunday morning, read the complete release notes...

Will iPad 3 Arrive In 2011

It’s incredible how fast new technology becomes outdated and obsolete these days. The iPad 2 hasn’t even gone on sale yet and there’s already rumors about iPad 3 making it’s debut sometime during the fall, around September to be exact. There’s no confirmation on whether or not these rumors are true. However, Apple must be [...]

This Room Is Entirely White [Video]

What's the fastest way to reupholster a couch, paint the walls, and otherwise totally change the look of a living room? Some 3D mapping, two projectors, and a garish color scheme were all it took to give this totally blank canvas an infinite variety of interior designs. If creators Mr. Beam are taking requests, maybe next time something in the key of Thundercats? [Reddit via OHYST] More »

Kamikaze Blocks is an explosive Time Waster

kamikazeblocks
When I write up a game, I usually have to classify it one way or the other: either it's an arcade-type game, or it's something more cerebral. Well, Kamikaze Blocks is one game that says, "why choose?"

The premise of the game is simple: It's a physics shooter, the type where you have to set off one or more explosive charges to blow all the blocks off the board. But what's unique about it is that you can choose whether or not you'd like to have a limited supply of shots every level. So if you want easy, arcade-style gameplay, you've got it - just use unlimited shots and blow those blocks off the board like there's no tomorrow.

On the other hand, if you're actually interested in a puzzle experience, simply select to have a limited number of shots, and there you go. Each level has a different quota of shots, depending on how complex it is.

Another thing I like about this game is the part where the fish eat the blocks once they've fallen off the stage. They make a really cute chewing sound!

Sonim XP3300 Force hands-on (through insulating gloves)

What do you do with a phone that claims it can withstand anything you throw its way? Dip it in sub-zero temperatures, bang it against concrete, drop it from great heights, and then stand on it? That was the full extent of our imagination today when getting to grips with the Sonim XP3300 Force and the damn thing didn't budge a millimeter, never mind an inch. It has a Gorilla Glass-protected screen and some rather self-apparent water- and impact-resistant hardware surrounding its soft electronic core. Changes in this latest model include the redesign of the Java-based OS, the internal power supply circuitry, the GPS module, and the antenna, all in the name of improving efficiency to a claimed 24 hours of talk time on a single charge. That's quite the feat, even if you can't exactly stream HD Flash videos using this chunky fella. The XP3300 Force is available in 50 countries around the world today, with pricing near $400 unsubsidized or between $50 and $150 on contract. Skip past the break for video of its endurance.
