BMW puts a range-extending ICE in its Megacity EV, provides tonic for your range anxiety

When we first left the safe confines of our parents' home, many of us experienced separation anxiety. As we grow older, we suffer from disconnection anxiety -- and no, iPhone owners, that doesn't refer to your fear of dropped calls. Now, BMW is combating our range anxiety, or fear of being stranded when your car's batteries run out of juice, by putting an internal combustion range extender in its Megacity EV. BMW is taking a page out of the Chevy Volt's playbook by placing a small ICE in its EV that doubles the rage of the vehicle from 50 to 100 miles -- all in an effort to assuage the (irrational?) fears of its potential US customers. The gasoline generator will be an option for those who wish to venture beyond the city limits, so if you want to keep it totally green you can still do so. Our Bavarian friends won't be bringing the Megacity to market until 2013, so that should give you enough time to decide if you want to hasten the death of the ICE or prolong its life a bit longer.

Could Watson Have Been Defeated by Homebrew? [Final Jeopardy]

Well before Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, IBM's design team grappled with a different challenge - getting beaten to the punch by someone else inventing a trivia-savvy artificial mind. Final Jeopardy discusses Watson's early development and how this Q&A juggernaut overcame the "Basement Baseline." More »

Building an iPhone Photo Filter Is a Lot Harder Than Using One [Video]

I think some law was passed in the last year that requires all photo apps to come with filters that function as aesthetic time machines, passing your perfectly fine photograph through a wormhole of analog nostalgia. It turns out that creating such a rift in photographic spacetime is not as easy as sending your photo through it. More »

Why Nobody Can Match the iPad?s Price

When Steve Jobs introduced the iPad last January, the biggest surprise wasn’t the actual product. (Many shrugged and called the iPad a “bigger iPhone.”) It was the price: Just $500. Nobody expected that number, perhaps because Apple has traditionally aimed at the high end of the mobile computer market with MacBooks marked $1,000 and up. And perhaps [...]

Android '2.4' Gingerbread will arrive in April, will support dual-core Honeycomb apps

No, that's not a typo: an update to Android 2.3 will arrive in April to allow single-core smartphones to run Honeycomb's dual-core apps. The news comes from hardware manufacturer Viewsonic, which insists the new version will be numbered 2.4 -- and it won't be called Ice Cream as expected; it will just be an updated version of Gingerbread.

Apparently the only change between 2.3 and 2.4 is the support for Honeycomb apps, which are designed to run with a dual-core processor -- and Android 2.3, as it stands, only supports single-core processors. Viewsonic is releasing a 'jumbo' smartphone with a 4.1" screen, which is why it understandably wants access to the Honeycomb library of tablet-oriented apps.

We're not sure why Google would break away from its now-famous versioning system. It's also odd that this news comes from a third party, and not Google itself. We wouldn't be surprised if this actually turns out to be version 2.3.3 or 2.3.4, rather than 2.4. The same source at Viewsonic also says that Ice Cream will be 3.1, and thus another tablet-oriented OS -- which would mean that the next smartphone version of Android could begin with 'J.'

Our money's on Jello.

RadioShack offers Atrix 4G for $150 on launch day, undercutting AT&T?

We'd heard rumors that Motorola's Atrix 4G would cost $150, but after AT&T priced the handset at $200 we figured they were all for naught. The Shack begs to differ: it's just revealed it will sell the modular Tegra 2 superphone on Feburary 22nd for that original $150 price. That's with a two-year contract, of course, and a data plan on top, but that means you'll shave $50 off the sum AT&T is asking, or $20 off the combo deal with the (somewhat disappointing) laptop dock. Still, if history's any judge, we don't expect savings like this to be exclusive to RadioShack for long.

[Thanks, Andrew F.]

The Met's upcoming opera to boast glasses-free 3D effects that nobody requested

We don't mean to sound negative or anything, and we're not 3D naysayers by any means. But the news that the Metropolitan Opera's upcoming production of Siegfried will include mind-blowing 3D background effects is, well, mind-blowing. While you're undoubtedly familiar with 3D effects, you may not be acquainted with Wagner's 1876 opera which portrays the story of Sigurd, a hero of Norse mythology. Robert Lepage, the director of the operation, expects theater-goers to find themselves engulfed in a three-dimensional world of his creation, which will be projected on the 45-ton set. Lepage, who is directing Wagner's entire Ring cycle at the Met, worked with Geodezik -- famous for the stage shows of famed opera performers Pink and Justin Timberlake -- to create the show's effects. The 3D you'll be seeing if you hit the theater won't be like the technology you're familiar with, however, as it makes use of fractals, and the moving parts of the set to 'trick' your eyes into seeing in three dimensions. We don't want to say this sounds like a bad idea until we've seen if of course, but we've got our reservations. Hit up the New York Times link to see one rather small image of the set.
