Xeno Defense is a fantastic tower defense Time Waster

xenodefense
117,944 - that's my final score in Xeno Defense. I think this is the first Time Waster I found addictive enough to actually play all the way to the end. It is a casual game - you don't have to finish it to enjoy it. But it was easy enough, and definitely addictive enough, for me to just finish. It took me about half an hour, I think.

There's a story line, but it's not very important. The gist of it is that you're a scientist stranded in an outpost, and there's an alien invasion. Your encampment is all the way to the right side of the screen, with swarms of aliens coming in from the left and trying to invade. Your job is to shoot them and defend your turf.

As the game evolves, you gain experience points. At the end of each level you go to the store and choose what you want to spend your points on: new buildings, new weapons, upgrade existing weapons, or invest in repairing your base.

The final goal is to build a weapon that's advanced enough to use against the alien mothership. This is done by building enough research buildings - but you must balance the buildings you buy with your weapons upgrades, because each swarm of aliens is stronger than the last.

I finished the game with two days to spare; what was your score?

Summer Glau and iPhone 4 in Esquire

Summer Glau and iPhone 4 in Esquire Summer Glau did a swimsuit photo shoot for Esquire and in the companion video, busts out an iPhone 4 to take some front-facing pics and to answer a call. We don’t post a lot of celebrity iPhone sightings here on TiPb because, frankly, there are far too many to post (and we don’t have CrackBerry’s [...]

Qualcomm fends off Smartbook AG, can legally write 'smartbook' on the platform's tombstone

Qualcomm fends of Smartbook AG legal action, can now write
It's perhaps a little too little and a little too late, but Qualcomm can now use the word "smartbook" to describe low end smartphone/laptop hybrids -- the sort of machine the company's CEO says have been all but killed off by tablets. The unfortunate legal action initiated by Smartbook AG way back in 2009 has now been deemed invalid by the German Patent and Trademark Office. The combination of the words word "smart" and "book" are no longer covered by German trademark law, which seemingly leaves Smartbook AG in a rather more vulnerable position than it was in before. Not as vulnerable as the poor smartbook platform, though.

Intel to spend $5 billion on new 14nm fab in Arizona, create 4,000 new jobs this year

When Paul Otellini isn't too busy talking about being jilted by Nokia, he spends his time hosting presidents and splashing billions of dollars on new manufacturing facilities. Intel's CEO is wrapping his tumultuous week on a high note, having welcomed Barack Obama to Chipzilla's Oregon facility and treated the president to the happy news that Intel will invest $5 billion back into the US economy by building its most advanced fab yet -- which will introduce an impossibly small 14nm production process -- in Arizona, to begin operation in 2013. Construction starts in the middle of this year and is expected to create "thousands" of jobs, both temporary and permanent. Aside from that, Otellini has disclosed Intel's intention to create 4,000 new jobs in the US, mostly in R&D and product development. Music to Obama's ears, we're sure.

AppBrain direct push-to-device app installation returns, emasculates Google's Android Market

The supremo Android app discovery site, AppBrain, has re-enabled direct push-to-phone app install functionality.

Like before, you still need to install the Fast Web Installer app and AppBrain app on your Android device (QR codes after the break). You also need to open the Fast Web Installer app on your phone and give it permission to install apps. Then, it's simply a matter of clicking 'Install' on the AppBrain website and waiting a few seconds for the app to whiz its way across the interwebs to your device.

It's worth noting that you can now uninstall apps from the AppBrain control panel, too -- or mass-install apps on a new phone!

You still can't use the AppBrain website to buy apps -- and apps that aren't available in your territory will simply fail to transfer. Still, there's no avoiding the fact that this simple change makes Google's first-party Android Market website all but useless.

There's a video of AppBrain's push-to-device Fast Web Installer after the break.

inPulse smartwatch turns programmable, and it can almost play Doom (video) (update)

Once upon a time the inPulse was a BlackBerry peripheral, but no more -- now, it's a fully programmable device-agnostic Bluetooth wrist computer. That's because its manufacturer Allerta released an SDK this week, which lets the 52Mhz ARM7 processor and 8Kb of RAM within display whatever you'd like on the 1.3-inch, 96 x 128 pixel screen. Like the time of day... or this tiny, practically unplayable 3D game. Yours for $149.

Update: Sounds like reports of the demise of BlackBerry support for InPulse were greatly exaggerated! The new developer support for the device is very much as described above, but the company assures us that Blackberry connectivity is still a huge part of inPulse, and that the Blackberry Main App is currently available from the company.
