MacBook Pro review (early 2011)

Apple might say we're in the post-PC era, but hey -- turns out they still make Macs in Cupertino, and the new MacBook Pro is actually one of the more aggressive refreshes in the machine's history. Not only has it been less than a year since the last MacBook Pro spec bump, but our 15-inch review unit is actually the first Sandy Bridge system we've received from any manufacturer. And it's not just the CPU that's new: Apple's also launching the new Thunderbolt high-speed interconnect, and there's been a big switch to an AMD Radeon HD 6750M GPU paired with Intel's integrated HD Graphics 3000, an arrangement that should offer both solid graphics performance and great battery life. That's a lot of new parts in a familiar case -- but do they add up to something more than just a speed bump? Read on for our full review!

iPad 2: The Only Thing Missing Is the Buy Now Button

Over the last year, I've been an iPad holdout. If you already have an iPhone and a MacBook, do you really need an iPad, too? Need is a relative term, of course, so let's use want instead. With Apple's introduction of the iPad 2 Wednesday, I now want an iPad 2. My reservations have been swiped away.

Samsung Video Editor now available for some Android 2.2 phones

Samsung, rather stealthily, has released a Video Editor for its Galaxy S and Vibrant Android 2.2 phones. The APK is available for those of us with different phones, but early reports suggest that it only works on Samsung's flagship phones for now. Keep an eye on the xda-developers thread, though: they will probably work out how to get it running on other phones soon.

Functionality-wise, Samsung Video Editor looks fantastic. You can trim video clips and join them together. There are various special effects that can be applied, and you can change sound tracks. There's even a variety of export options!

And yes, in case you're wondering, editing video on your phone will suck your battery dry.

Apple Sticks It to the DIY Repairman

People have always had an interest in repair. Haynes Manuals helped pave the road for today's do-it-yourself industry more than 50 years ago, providing people with written instructions on how to take apart their cars. Repairs can be taxing and frustrating, especially when the manufacturing company focuses on style and assembly, and not disassembly.

KitchenPad Timer Pro App for iOS

There are a lot of kitchen timers on the market, but few of them look as cool as the KitchenPad Timer Pro app.  This app is designed for iPhone/iPod and for iPad.  The photo is a screenshot showing how it looks on my iPad.  You can set nine individual timers – five stove-top and four [...]

Smartphones and tablets still have a long way to grow

Anyone who believes we're nearing some sort of saturation point with the two hottest device classes of the moment -- smartphones and tablets -- ought to check out this latest data from investment bank RBC Capital Markets. It shows an estimated 394 million people already possess one of these newfangled gadgets, and -- while we don't consider the world's population a relevant metric here -- sets that number up against some other illustrative stats. The most important one for smartphone growth is the tally of mobile subscribers, which stands at just over five billion presently and dwarfs any inroads that smart mobile devices have made to this point. The total of nearly 1.3 billion PCs should also be encouraging for companies seeking a market for their tablets, as it quantifies the sheer volume of computers we use and need. So, next time anyone asks you if it's "too late" for Nokia to right its smartphone strategy or HP to deliver its tablets, you can juice up your negatory response by dropping this statistical knowledge bomb.

Mac OS X Lion Time Machine capable of 'Local Snapshots' without external hard drive

OS X Lion Time Machine local snapshots
9to5 Mac has uncovered another cool feature in OS X Lion: Apple's back up tool, Time Machine, will support backups to an internal hard drive.

Dubbed 'Local Snapshots,' it sounds like it will be very similar to Versions, another new feature in OS X Lion that keeps track of changes to documents, and lets you revert to older versions. Local Snapshots, on the other hand, will take a snapshot of every modified file on your hard drive every hour. It sounds like it could drain an awful lot of system resources (CPU time and hard drive space), but we'll have to wait and see.

If anything, it just sounds like this is a convenience measure more than anything else: we should make daily backups, but plugging in an external hard drive every night is a pain in the ass. With Local Snapshots, you can go a few days without plugging in -- and when you finally do, Time Machine will copy all of your local snapshots to the external drive.

Energy Efficiency Measures Saved AT&T $44 Million In 2010

Telecommunications giant AT&T announced the results of its 2010 energy efficiency efforts today. According to the company's own report, it saw $44 million in annualized energy savings as a result of implementing 4,200 energy efficiency projects at its facilities last year. These included familiar technologies that, pervasively applied, made a big difference, like:
Swapping incandescent light bulbs with light emitting diodes (LEDs) at 1,100 cell sites Removing switches and upgrading networks at 11 offices, reducing the company's network-related power consumption by some 300,000 kilowatt hours Using desktop power management software on 169,000 computers
AT&T has done some form of environmental accounting (corporate social responsibility or CSR reports as they're referred to now) since at least 1995, so they have some cred. The timing of this green news, however, seems part of a strategic effort to win the public, and institutional investors' favor at a challenging time. The company has generated a mixed bag of headlines of late.
