Android Quick-App: N64 Emulator

 Mario 64

One of the great things about Android is the ability to install emulators and ROMS that allow you to play your favorite games from past consoles. The latest to hit the market is N64 Emulator, which plays such popular games as Goldeneye and Super Smash Brothers.

After playing the NES, SNES and N64 emulators, the N64 version is more playable thus far, though by a small margin. I think what makes the difference is the joystick, which is extremely functional and works a lot better than I expected it to.

If you’re not familiar with emulators, they create a virtual controller on your screen. An interesting part of N64 is that there is an important button, Z, on the bottom of the controller. Obviously there is nothing comparable on your mobile device, so they have positioned it in the top left corner of the screen. The joystick is on the bottom left, A + B are bottom right, the yellow C buttons are above A + B, and R is top right.

The layout is solid, but difficult for some games, like Goldeneye, that require the use of all of the controls. This is a difficult predicament to overcome and smooth gameplay will only come with practice or heavy configuration of the controls.

Some of the best games to play on this app are racing games, due to the fact that they require less buttons. I’ve played MarioKart 64 and Diddy Kong Racing and both have played very well. I assume this will mean games like F-Zero X and Wave Racer 64 will play just as well.

I have also spent some time with Madden, NHL, Mario Golf and Super Smash Brothers. The sports games worked fine while Smash Brothers was a bit more difficult due to the amount you depend on the C Buttons.

Keep in mind that I’m playing all of these games on a Samsung Galaxy Tab and that on a smaller screen where the buttons are closer together, you may get better results.

Overall I am very pleased with N64 Emulator. It’s amazing that we can get these games to work well on our mobile devices. To have Goldeneye and Perfect Dark available in my pocket at all times is unbelievable.

The app is $5.99 and is available from the Android Market. While the price seems high, it’s worth it in my opinion. Just to have the ability to play any N64 game you want at anytime is worth it to me. Check out a video, more pictures and download links after the break.

Love The Twitter #Dickbar? Get Your Own, We Did

Regardless of what you think about the Quick Bar in the newest version of Twitter for iOS, there's no contesting that it's definitely captured tech pundits' imaginations for the past weekend or so. This happened primarily because of general ad aversion but was aided by the fact that influential tech blogger John Gruber catchily dubbed it the Dick Bar, in homage to both new Twitter CEO Dick Costolo and the fact that the "alerting function" is a little obtrusive and a little too hard on (that's what she said) Promoted Trends, which really aren't trends at all but ads, costing advertisers around 100K a pop.

Farragomate is a social fridge magnet game where you make up sentences

farragomate
You know those fridge magnet kits composed of a whole bunch of words? The ones you put all over your fridge door and then try to arrange into all sorts of juvenile and/or amusing sentences. Well, Farragomate is the social, webby version of that very same pastime.

You get to play with a bunch of random strangers in real-time, and make up sentences out of a pre-set collection of words, including some fairly naughty ones, and all players' nicknames. As you can imagine, some of the results are not child-friendly.

There are ten rounds to a game. Once a round is done, players get to vote for their favorite sentence from that round. You can't vote for your own creation, of course. There's in-game chat, too.

I think the vocabulary could be made a bit more eclectic, but even as it is, it's a nice way to spend a few minutes and meet random strangers on the Internet (always a thrilling experience).

Zeus malware variant begins targetting BlackBerry users

It's been widely reported that the world's millions of smartphones are the next juicy target for malware creators, and we're beginning to see the shift. Trojanized apps recently infiltrated the Android Market and now Trend Micro is reporting that a Zeus trojan variant has begun infecting BlackBerry devices.

The trojan installs silently and then notifies its administrators that the compromised device is ready to receive instructions. Trend notes that an infected BlackBerry can be forced to block calls and phone numbers, add administrator accounts, turn the device on or off, and forward, delete, and display SMS messages.

While BlackBerry devices seem to be the primary target, Zeus variants have also been spotted on Symbian and Windows Mobile phones.

As is the case with desktop malware, vigilance and knowledge is the best defense: don't install untrusted apps and don't visit links you're unsure of on your mobile device.

Google saddened by Chrome crashes due to outdated video drivers

Gamers and other enthusiasts know the importance of keeping their video card's drivers current, but it's not something the vast majority of the computing public pays any attention to. If the computer is running OK, there's no need to update drivers, right?

As it turns out, there's a very good reason to update: your old driver might be causing your Web browser to crash excessively. That's what Google is reporting over at the Chromium blog. If you're surfing with Chrome and using an outdated driver, it could be wreaking havoc with Chrome's GPU acceleration and WebGL features.

Along with HTML5 support and tracking protection, hardware acceleration has become part of the 'geeky trinity' of features to trumpet in next-gen Web browsers. As developers tap deep into your computer's hardware to squeeze out additional performance gains, keeping your drivers fully updated -- especially for the graphics card which is handling all that accelerated rendering -- is going to be very, very important.

Did Dr. Richard B. Hoover Just Discover Alien Life? [Science]

So the methane organisms discovered in that hostile little lake in California weren't such a big deal after all. No harm, no foul—they were at the very least interesting. Interesting, but nothing like this: Dr. Richard Hoover, as astrobiologist with NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, claims he's found alien life. More »

Aquafairy AF-M3000 might finally make consumer fuel cell charging a disappointing reality (video)

Aquafairy AF-M3000 might finally make consumer fuel cell charging a disappointing reality (video)
We've been promised portable fuel cells for ages, now. Ages! Finally one is only months away from release -- but its performance seems so limited we're not sure we care anymore. It's the Aquafairy AF-M3000 and, despite its name, it's powered not by water but by ethanol metal hydride fuel packs. Here's where the bad news comes in: a single fuel pack only provides enough current to get an iPhone up to a 50 percent charge, and it'll take 90 minutes at that. So, you'll need two cartridges and three hours of your time just to bring a dead mobile back to life, and given each pack costs around $6 (it's 2,625 yen, about $32 for a pack of five), the entire proposition is rather expensive. That doesn't even factor in the cost of the unit itself: 26,250 yen or about $320. It's set to ship in Japan in April, so get ready to finally enter the future. Nobody said it'd necessarily be a great place to be.

Update: We heard from Aquafairy, who confirmed that the solution is not ethanol, but is actual a solution of water and metal hydride. Also, the price is just for what are termed "test sales" and there are discounts if you buy a bunch. Maybe the future looks better if you buy in bulk.

RIM Finally Sees The Light. Unfortunately, It?s An Onrushing Train ? Or Is It?

Strange things are afoot in my hometown of Waterloo, Canada, which doubles as Research In Motion's headquarters. ShopSavvy says that someone there has been running their Android app ? on BlackBerry devices. Separately, Bloomberg has reported that RIM's forthcoming PlayBook tablet will run Android apps. A video from the Mobile World Congress allegedly shows a BlackBerry employee confirming "We'll also support Android apps." Their UK managing director refuses to comment on the subject. And if rumours of the mountain en route to Mohammed aren't enough, there are also reports of Mohammed travelling to the mountain: BGR claims that RIM will soon release their prized BlackBerry Messenger as an Android/iOS app. Thus far it's all just smoke and rumors, no confirmed fire ... which is also how one could describe the PlayBook itself. RIM first announced the device back in September. My very first TechCrunch post in November was in part about how RIM should embrace Android, he said slightly smugly. Since then, Samsung has released the Galaxy Tab, Dell the Streak 7, and Motorola the Xoom; next week, the iPad 2 will emerge ? and yet the PlayBook still has no firm ship date. But at least RIM have been busy on the BlackBerry front, right? I mean, in the last four months, they have announced or released ... er ... exactly zero new handsets. (They have, however, announced three new VaporBooks. I'm sorry, PlayBooks.) Perhaps they were focused on shoring up their inferior app-development tools? Ask this developer, whose caustic and hilarious rant about RIM's extreme developer-unfriendliness went viral in the hacker community last week.

Internet access blocked across much of Libya

It's sort of becoming the "thing to do" when people are revolting: find a way to cut people's access to the internet. This happened across most of Libya yesterday, according to various traffic monitors. Traffic from the country to sites like YouTube and Google nearly disappeared, even though it seems that technically, the servers are still up and running. Unlike the previous actions of the Egyptian government, which took down entire servers, it appears that in this case, some wicked throttling is occurring. While it's not completely clear who is choking the bandwidth, the assumption that it's the Libyan government is probably not an insane one. Hit up the source links for more.

Judge Allows Sony?s Request For Identifying Information For Anyone Who Visited Hacker?s Sites

This is a rather disturbing turn of events. Federal Magistrate Joseph Spero has approved a request by Sony to subpoena the hacker GeoHot's web host, as well as YouTube, Google, and Twitter, for identifying information on anyone who has accessed, commented, or viewed information relating to the hack. At best this is lazy on Sony's part and irresponsible on Magistrate Spero's, and at worst it is a deliberate and malicious wholesale violation of privacy. The pretense for this wildly overreaching action is that Sony needs this information to prove the case should be tried in San Francisco, in federal court and close to Sony's headquarters. And why do they feel it should be? Because that's in Sony's terms of service. This after another judge noted that by Sony's standards, "the entire universe would be subject to [her] jurisdiction."
