The 1906 earthquake that took place in S.F. was epic for the time, leveling countless buildings, igniting fires, and generally causing chaos. It was also responsible for some great photography. But did you know that someone took 3D color photos of the aftermath? More »

Listen to the Man Who Invented 'Control-Alt-Delete' Explain Its Origin (And Insult Bill Gates in the Process) [Video]

David Bradley is the IBM programmer responsible for bringing "Control-Alt-Delete," that most comforting of key-combinations, into this world. Here he explains how it came to be and can't help but add who he considers responsible for making it a 'cultural icon.' Hint: that person is not very amused with the distinction! [YouTube] More »

On Apple TV Special Apps, Sports, And The Slow Bleeding Of Cable

Buried today in the iOS 4.3 release is an unmentioned, but very interesting update for the Apple TV: access to both MLB.tv and NBA League Pass. Yes, the live sports are coming to the Apple TV! That's great news for Apple TV owners, but such functionality has actually been available for some time on the rival boxes by Roku. Still, the ramifications of this are potentially huge because the lack of sports content has been the one point used over and over again in arguments against these new wave of Internet-powered set-top boxes killing cable. Between this, Roku, and Xbox Live getting ESPN content, we're definitely getting closer to a full-on cable revolt.

G Data CloudSecurity offers free protection from Web malware

free web malware protection
You may not have heard of G Data, but the German security software developer consistently posts top marks in antivirus tests. Now, we know many of you don't like toolbars, but G Data CloudSecurity for Firefox and Internet Explorer is one that might be good enough to recommend to your friends and family who need help avoiding malware on the Web.

CloudSecurity offers functionality much like the browser components offered by many antivirus and anti-malware apps (including AVG, Avast, and Norton). Once installed, CloudSecurity checks Web pages for all kinds of malicious activity -- from phishing to malware-infested code and downloads. It's also worth noting that the G Data toolbar doesn't noticeably delay the opening of new tabs in Internet Explorer -- IE9's add-on manager reports a total time of about half a second.

If you know people who have trouble resisting the allure of fakeAV pop-ups and Facebook scam links, you may just want to install CloudSecurity for them to provide a little extra protection.

BlackBerry Protect enters (mostly) open beta

blackberry protect remote lock wipe
RIM's BlackBerry Protect app is ready for a larger test audience, the company announced in a blog post. BlackBerry Protect is an all-in-one security tool for helping users recover their lost or stolen phone and prevent unwanted access to their personal data.

BlackBerry Protect offers GPS tracking, remote lock and wipe (including SD card data), and the ability to display a pop-up message on the device or force a loud ring to aid in location. The app also allows users to perform periodic wireless backups or force one on-demand. That means you can remotely push all the data you meant to sync just hours before you misplaced your phone. Data can be restored wirelessly as well.

To get in on the BlackBerry Protect beta test, you'll need to be a resident of North America or Latin America, have a device running OS 4.6 or better, and be a registered Beta Zone member -- so head over and sign up!

Nissan to give Leaf faster charger in 2012: home charging goes from glacial to a snail's pace?

Though well on its way to joining the Dodo, one of the internal combustion engine's advantages over its plug-in competition is refuel time -- it only takes a few minutes to gas up, but you're talking hours for an EV to top off its batteries via a standard 220 / 240-volt socket. This fact is not lost on Nissan, as it just revealed plans to offer a higher-rate charger in its 2012 Leaf -- the current model's 3.3kW charger needs eight hours to power up -- in order to better compete with the Ford Focus Electric's three to four hour charge time courtesy of its 6.6kW. And all you early adopters won't be "orphaned," as 2011 model Leafs can be retrofitted with the new electrics -- no word if Daddy Warbucks will be footing the bill.

TetherGPS brings GPS navigation to Nook Color, in a manner of speaking

TetherGPS brings GPS navigation to Nook Color without Bluetooth
The smart folks over at ComptonSoft are looking to provide a GPS receiver to your mobile device in a rather unconventional way. TetherGPS links up your Android phone's GPS to the Nook Color by means of WiFi -- either on the same network or via a WiFi tether -- because the Nook Color is lacking in the standard usable Bluetooth department. After connecting the two devices, it makes a second link by running a TGPS server on the phone and a TGPS client on the Nook. The two devices are then intertwined in a blissful, all-you-can-GPS buffet of routes and roads. For the most part, the Nook's location-aware Android applications, such as Google Maps, will draw from this connection for location data and use it as if there were a GPS receiver on board. TetherGPS is up for grabs for $2.99 on the Android Market, and there's also a free "Lite" version for those who only need GPS for five minutes at a time -- we'll assume you know who you are.

[Thanks, Red]

Ask DLS: Cross-platform multiplayer games that work on Android and iOS

askdls
Here's one for our knowledgeable commenters: I recently bought my girlfriend an iPad. I, on the other hand, own an Android device. And now we're looking for games we can play using both devices.

There's no dearth of multiplayer games either for Android or for iOS. But finding multiplayer games that can cross the platform boundary is an entirely different matter.

Jay recently posted Words with Friends which is one such game. It's actually an ideal example, because it's turn-based so you don't necessarily both have to be next to your device at the same time (great for long-distance gaming).

But what other examples are there? What multiplayer games are there that let iOS users play with Android users?

[Why am I now humming 'Ebony and Ivory'? -Ed]
