N64oid for Android completes the retro Nintendo emulator trinity

N64oid Nintendo 64 emulation
Yongzh, the same developer behind NESoid, SNESoid, GameBoid, Ataroid, and more (!), has finally released the last and most important Android retro emulator: N64oid.

N64oid looks and feels like Yongzh's other emulators, and like NESoid it has the option of using hardware keys (if you have them!) or an on-screen gamepad. We won't lie: gaming with an on-screen controller is nothing like the real thing; it works, but pulling off combos, like those required in fighting games, is not easy.

There's an option to use your Android device's accelerometer as the N64's analog stick, however, which could make RPGs like Zelda a lot easier to play. Also, all told, Yongzh's emulators have been downloaded around 5 million times, so the on-screen gamepad is obviously not that bad.

Game compatibility is apparently very good, and if you have a high-end device like the Nexus S, Samsung Galaxy or Droid, games should run very smoothly. As far as finding games to play with N64oid, if you still have your old N64 cartridges in a cupboard somewhere (who doesn't?), you can find ROM backups with a quick Google search.

We'll hopefully have a hands-on review of N64oid later today, so we'll be able to tell you first-hand just how good (or bad) it is.

Read our hands-on review of N64oid.

Speedtest.net overhauled with new look, new features

speedtest
Speedtest.net is pretty much the go-to site for quickly figuring out how fast (or slow) your connection really is and comparing the numbers your ISP boasts with what it actually delivers. And now it's got a new coat of paint and a couple of neat features. In brief:
  • New UI: The map widget is much improved; it actually looks like a map now, and it's easy to see where you are.
  • Smart server selection: If there are several test servers nearby, Speedtest will now ping each to see which has the least latency and use that for the test. You can still specify servers manually, too.
  • User accounts: You can sign up for a free account and aggregate results from several computers/connections.
  • Speed Wave: This new feature lets you add your test results to the results of many other users, and get a nice composite view.
All in all, you get some nice, new functionality and a snazzier interface to boot. Nice!

iOS 4.3 jailbreak with PwnageTool

PwnageTool jailbreak of iOS 4.3
Mere hours after the release of the iOS 4.3 golden master to developers, Redmond Pie has compiled a guide to jailbreak the new version with a combination of PwnageTool and Universal Ramdisk Fixer.

It's definitely not a one-click jailbreak, however, and it's still tethered at this stage -- you'll have to re-jailbreak every time you reboot -- but it's a promising indicator that a proper jailbreak from greenpois0n could emerge soon.

AT&T will cap DSL and U-Verse internet, impose overage fees

Ladies and gentlemen, the days of unlimited internet may be numbered in the United States -- AT&T will reportedly implement a 150GB monthly cap on DSL customers and a 250GB cap on subscribers to U-Verse high speed internet starting on May 2nd, and charge overage fees of $10 for every additional 50GB of data. DSLReports says it has confirmation from AT&T spokesman Seth Bloom that these rates are legitimate, and a statement spinning the move as a logical extension of the company's tiered wireless data plans for smartphone use.

Survey shows the many advantages of virtual offices (beyond the ability to work sans pants)

Those of us who do almost all of our work from the comforts of our homes will not be surprised by what follows, but the rest of the world should take note. A new survey of directors of 600 small to medium sized business reveal that upper-management sees major benefits of so-called "virtual office" work environments. So what are those advantages? Well, no shockers here, chief among the perceived advantages are lowered costs, flexibility for employee (such as the ability to hire people in different geographic locations), and cutting down on pollution and commute times and costs. In fact, over half of businesses reported a cost savings of around $10,000 a month by using the "virtual" environment. So... welcome to our world, world!

Hulu for Android coming soon, destined for 'select' phones with Android 2.2?

Since the dawn of Flash on Android -- yes, that was just ten months ago -- Google smartphone users been largely unable to access their favorite Hulu programs on the go. At CES 2011, we heard that Hulu would indeed come to Android, but not when or where. Today, we're a step closer to the answer. An eagle-eyed Engadget reader spotted this image at the company's website, depicting a most unusual combo: an image of a Samsung Nexus S (which comes with Android 2.3) and a suggestion that Hulu Plus will soon be available on a subset of devices running Android 2.2. We can't say which devices quite yet, but we've heard this tune before, and suspect Hulu will only run on phones that have DRM baked into their hardware. Now how about that Google TV?

[Thanks, Raymond D.]

Google promises tighter Android Market security in wake of Trojan outbreak

When we first reported on applications in the official Android Market being infected with a Trojan backdoor, 21 malicious apps were found. After the dust had settled, the total was closer to 60 -- and Google has now announced what it is doing to undo the damage and prevent future outbreaks in the Market.

For starters, Google is remotely wiping the rogue applications from users' devices and pushing a security update for the Android Market app. Google will also email a notice to affected users to let them know that the update has been applied and that changes made by the Trojan-bearing apps have been undone. A confirmation notice will also be sent once the cleanup has finished.

Google also promised to beef up the Android Market's security systems and stated that work is underway with various partners to address "underlying issues."

The Android Market is now at the point where it's got a vast number of high-quality apps. Perhaps now that its security shortcomings have been exposed, it's time to slow the inrush of new apps and devote more time and resources to making sure no more Android users fall victim to such attacks.

Chrome updated with faster JavaScript engine, tabbed settings and password sync

Chrome stable update
Last month's beta version of Chrome has become the new stable build, bringing a large JavaScript performance improvement to hundreds of millions of Chrome users. While it's a bit meaningless at this stage, this means the stable channel is now version 10, which first appeared at the end of 2010.

The main addition to this version is Crankshaft, a new version of the V8 JavaScript engine that results in 66% faster JavaScript performance -- as measured by Google's own V8 benchmark, anyway. Amongst other changes is the new-look tabbed settings page, sandboxed Adobe Flash for better security, and passwords are now synced with Chrome Sync. For complete release notes, check the Google Chrome Releases blog.

To update to the latest stable version of Chrome, simply close your browser and re-open it -- the update should be applied automatically. Alternatively, click the wrench icon and then About Google Chrome, which will check for the the latest update.
