WordPress enables new iPad-optimized layout for its 18 million blogs

WordPress iPad themeWordPress has just announced the introduction of a 'pure HTML5' iPad-optimized theme. It has been automatically activated for all 18 million WordPress.com blogs, and self-hosted WordPress.org users can download and install the plug-in manually.

The iPad-optimized layout, which was developed with tablet publishing specialist OnSwipe, supports touch interactions, swiping, rotation and 'many other features of the iPad,' all with the power of HTML5. The theme is highly configurable, too. You can change the font typeface, choose from nine different 'skins' to match your existing blog theme, and you can set a 'cover' image. Of course, if you want visitors to simply see your normal blog theme, you can just disable the new iPad plug-in.

WordPress, which claims that it powers over 10% of the Web, says that it currently serves 750,000 pages views a day to iPad users -- a number that will surely explode over the next few years. What we're seeing here, first with Flickr last week, and now with the WordPress juggernaut firmly embracing tablet computing, is a resounding acknowledgment of a post-PC world. It's a very good sign of things to come, too; we expect there'll be a lot of tablet-optimized websites in 2011.

Xperia bootloader unlocking will be available in 'upcoming weeks'

Xperia Arc

A while ago we reported that Sony Ericsson would be offering a bootloader unlocking solution for their 2011 Xperia line, and today Xperia Blog has some information about how this will play out.  According to SE developer Karl-Johan Dahlström, Sony Ericsson plans to have a bootloader site "up and running in the upcoming weeks."

The website will allow you to enter the IMEI number from your Xperia device, and you'll be given a key to unlock that devices bootloader via Fastboot.  SE has promised more details, but as it stands this is great news.  I'm loving the way Sony Ericsson has tackled this issue, and given hardware access to the people who paid for their devices.  We know that SE realizes the mistakes of the past, and this is a great way to make the future more user friendly. [Xperia Blog] Thanks, Rick!

Gargantuan SQL injection infects 3.8 million URLs, installs rogue antivirus

LizaMoon SQL injection rogue AV
Over the last few days, a mass SQL injection attack has been quickly gathering speed. Just three days ago only 28,000 URLs were affected, but at the time of writing, there could be up to 3.8 million infected URLs.

Websense
has a complete write up the attack, dubbed 'LizaMoon,' but here's the basic gist: it looks like someone is exploiting a vulnerabilty (or vulnerabilities) in hundreds of thousands of websites running on Microsoft SQL Server 2003 and 2005. It's not yet known whether this is a vulnerability in SQL Server, or simply a case of outdated, unmaintained, and easily-exploitable CMSes.

The attack takes the form of an SQL injection, which then inserts a link to a JavaScript file hosted on the attacker's server. This is repeated over and over until every Web page in the SQL database has been infected -- and considering 3.8 million URLs have been infected, you can see that this is a very easy, and automated, attack.

Fortunately, the JavaScript isn't particularly malicious: it pops up a rogue AV program called Windows Stability Center, but that's it. Better yet, the rogue antivirus is already recognized by a bunch of real antivirus suites, including Avast, Panda and Microsoft Security Essentials.

The real problem with SQL injection attacks is that there's nothing we surfers can do about them. There will always be old and unmaintained websites, and thus SQL injections will remain one of the easiest and most lucrative tools of hackers and spammers alike. All you can do is keep your antivirus and anti-malware software up to date, and pray.

Xigo Wants To Shrink Your Company?s Phone Bill (For Free)

If you're a family of 3 or 4 people, it's pretty easy to figure out if you're spending too much on your phone bill. Pop into something like Billshrink, plug in your credentials, and away you go. If you're a company with 20,000 employee phones to your name, it's a different story. Running BillShrink 20,000 times probably isn't going to cut it, so shaving costs usually requires dumping anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand bucks into a specialized "Telecom Expense Management" (or, as the cool kids call it, TEM) service. This morning, a company called Xigo is looking to turn that TEM market up on its head. Beginning today, they're offering a free, automated service built to analyze the wireless bills of companies with as many as 50,000 phones under their belt.

Look Before You Leap: A Consumer's Guide to the Cloud

We've had cloud-based services for consumers for years. That includes online storage services, photo sites like Picasa and Flickr, social networks like Facebook and Twitter, Web apps like Google Apps and even online email systems. Verizon and MetroPCS objections to FCC net neutrality rules dismissed in case of premature litigation

The FCC wants to put new rules in place ensuring access to the web is, like justice, blind to where a person is coming from and indifferent to where on the web he is going to. Verizon's first reaction to these new directives was to publicly decry them as overreaching, and its second was to file a lawsuit, one that was swiftly echoed by MetroPCS. Only problem with their plans? The rules haven't yet been published in the Federal Register, which renders the legal challenges from the two eager mobile carriers "incurably" premature. Such was the determination of the US Court of Appeals, which refused to make a substantive ruling and just threw the cases out due to the technicality. Verizon isn't discouraged, however, and promises to bide its time until all the dominoes have fallen into place before launching another legal attack. Hey, whatever keeps those lawyers in their fancy suits.

This Receiver Is So Future-Proofed, It Won't Work with Any TV [Receivers]

Onkyo's new HT-RC370 and HT-RC360 receivers are pretty beefy—7.2 channel audio, THX certification on the former, wireless connectivity, and net radio streaming. But what really stands out is 4K video upscaling—so powerful, you can't even use it. Errr. More »
